Diagnosis
Seed cones ellipsoidal, borne terminally and laterally; vascular cylinder of cone axis with false growth ring; pith cells heterogeneous; primary xylem endarch; secondary xylem lacking resin canals and xylem parenchyma; tracheids mostly with polygonal or circular bordered pits in biseriate alternate on radial walls, when uniseriate crowded; cortex parenchymatous with scattered fibers; cortical resin canals abundant; bract-scale complex dominated by bract, ovuliferous scale on adaxial side of lower one-half of bract, scale margins free from bract, proximal margin three-lobed; reversed seeds ovate and flat, three per ovuliferous scale. Leaf decurrent on stem, vascular strand minute, centrally located; resin canals three per leaf, two lateral, one medial and abaxial to vascular strand; transfusion tissue on each lateral side of vascular strand; palisade mesophyll on adaxial side of needle; hypodermal cells thick; stomatal zones on lateral sides of central vascular bundle, but stomata in detail and precise arrangement unknown.
