- Plant with highly dissected primary xylem column in stem and branches. Stem with distantly spaced lateral branches. Branching system made up of at least two orders of branches and ultimate units, with higher orders of branches inserted in opposite to alternate pattern; ultimate units often recurved, isodichotomously forked; complete branching system more or less planate. Fertile branching systems three dimensional, with second order branches bearing lateral stalks to closely aggregated discoidal sporangia.
